In 1979, Congress passed legislation (Export Administration Act of 1979) which required the executive branch to create and maintain a list of countries deemed to have repeatedly provided support for acts of international terrorism. In December 1979, the Carter Administration declared four countries as state sponsors of terrorism including: Iraq, Libya, Syria, and Southern Yemen.
Even Clinton said they were in possession or pursuing possession of WMD’s. The last thing we needed was a state sponsor of terror doing that. We all knew Bush Sr. should have taken out Saddam the first time because we would only end up going back. At least this time once we finally leave, it will be less likely that we’ll have to go back.

who said they weren’t…the key point you omit is who declared them working hand in hand with Al Qaida? only the previous administration, with no proof to date since the US takeover of Iraq 6 plus years ago

And you expect an honest intelligent response to a question(?) like that?

You can trace a direct line from today’s Muslim terrorists to the rise of the Ayatollah Khomeini in Iran in 1979. He rose to power on fundamental Islamic values and basically started the theocracy in Iran. Carter was correct to declare Iran a terrorist state. What we see today is actually less extreme than the Iran of 1979, although Ahmadinejad is still a nut-case.

A better question is why did the Reagan Administration supply Saddam Hussein with advanced weaponry, including biological and chemical weapons?

He wasn’t enlightened and sensitive to Islamic feelings as we are today. Good luck to you
