Couple of my friends came up with an idea to open up a company to export some products to Europe. They are wondering what are the legal procedures to open up a company like this? Any online source of information or any ideas or is there anyone who got any clue related to this topic? Moreover, are there specific rules which products can be and which products cannot be exported from USA? Say electronics such as ipods, iphones, laptops, etc…
Thank you very much in advance for your consideration.
Congratulations on your decision to enter the International Market.
Yes there are many rules of compliance regarding the Global Marketplace which may seem a little surpising. For example, garage door opener shipments may be closely scrutinized because those devices have been used to remotely detonate explosives. Learning to be compliant is one of the most important areas of consideration before entering into a particular country. The Bureau of Industry and Security "BIS" division of the US Commerce Department has an excellent on-line, introductory course entitled "Essentials of Export Controls".
Here you will find lectures with slide presentations focusing on your legal and logistical concerns for a total of around two hours. The course is free, paid by our tax dollars actually, and there is no registration required. Once you complete these presentations you will be better able to direct your time and efforts toward the final goal of selling your product and collecting your money.
