do let me know if there is scope for other things as i am open to new opportunities.

Hi,
you can export any textiles of any nature, unless its not banned by the Uk government. I live in London and its easy to export textiles especially the ones you are talking about. But the problem is you would find very high competition. You can contact me on harsha7kp@yahoo.com and I could help you out. But Im not sure if you are the owner of a garment factory or you are talking about home based garment work.

Hi there,
I just started a business called Investifieds. We connect entrepreneurs and investors like yourself. It’s located at http://www.investifieds.com. I have seen a few garment businesses looking for funding/management advice/etc so hopefully you can find something there.
Best of luck!

Hello,

I’ve been involved with international trade for over 16 years in over 116 countries now.

The apparel industry is highly competitive, saturated, and mature but that doesn’t mean you cant find yourself a nice to capitalize on. That’s what so great about exporting – there’s a buyer somewhere out there.

I’ve provided a link to help you understand the market with regard to trade statistics.

Id also look into getting a better grasp of the export business in general.

As for starting a focus on the UK – there’s a few things you need to make sure you grasp about that market:

1) The global economic crisis has affected the UK substantially and the British pound has depreciated which depending on where you live (I’m assuming the US) can affect demand. However the stronger Euro also makes EU suppliers less competitive so its still a matter of where you plan to compete.

2) Lower consumer confidence is hurting retail sales, making some retailers reluctant to commit to new products and lines.

3) The UK is a high sophisticated market and not suitable for all products.

4) Complex EU technical/regulatory requirements can be burdensome.

5) “Devolved Administrations” present some differences in policies/regulations among Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales.

Having said all that, the current economic downturn does present new opportunities in select market segments.

You need to demonstrate a clear competitive advantage (i.e. price, quality, branding) and play close attention to both the obvious and subtle cultural differences and adjust marketing strategies accordingly.

Evaluate prospective partners carefully and choose an experienced, well-established local distributor and be flexible in working with them during these challenging times.

Most important – express your commitment to the market with a long-term perspective!

You wont need an export license unless your garments have some military application we dont know about. I know here in the US there are no restrictions unless you are selling armor.

The UK has too many trade associations but you can easily find those related to your specific apparel business and contact them about importers. See link provided on the International Chamber of Commerce to start.

You can also attend trade shows – I provided a link to the most popular apparel event in the UK.

Good Luck!
