Here’s a link to the US government in regards to Importing/Exporting:
http://www.business.gov/expand/import-export/
On the site, there’s multiple links includes:
Getting Started in Exporting – An introduction to importing and exporting, which includes faqs, getting in-person assistance, and business opportunities.
How to Obtain Export Financing – How to obtain U.S. government financing to expand or develop export markets.
Importing Goods – Information for businesses interested in importing goods into the U.S.
Trade Agreements – Learn about trade agreements and how to report barriers to fair trade.
Business Travel – Learn about conducting business abroad, and find resources and paperwork for you and your business partners overseas.
Importing/Exporting Specific Products – Information on the import and export of specific products regulated by federal agencies.
Also be sure that whatever business you get into, that it follows the laws and regulations of the Customs and Border Control: http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/trade/
Then finally, last but not least, at one point in time, I spoke to a CEO of a company that outsourced. We asked him were did he find his resources and other additional information he need as far as outsourcing his products. He told us about a site called Alibaba ( http://www.alibaba.com/ ). At Alibaba, you find leads if you’re a company trying to sell something or you can find a supplier if you’re trying to find something to get made.
There is also a community there ( http://resources.alibaba.com/discussion_board/84/basics_of_import_export.htm ) with forums and all sorts of Q&A. You can probably go around looking for some answers and maybe even sign up and join. Perhaps you can talk to other people in the industry to get more advice from them that have hands-on experiences or maybe even an expert who knows a lot about importing/exporting.
Hope that helps! Good luck!
