Export tax to hit steel cos’ expansion plans

The steel slabs made at Sajjan Jindal’s Vijaynagar plant are sent to his newly acquired steel mill in the US to be rolled into pipes, so that JSW Steel can reap higher margins. But the government’s decision to retain export duty on slabs and other semi finished products while exempting finished steel now means that JSW could now actually be losing money from such cross-border transactions.
