The Windward Islands are the southern group of the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies, curving generally southward for c.300 mi (480 km) from the Leeward Islands toward NE Venezuela. Excluding Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago, which are in the region but are not part of the group, the Windward Islands consist of the French overseas dept. of Martinique and the former British Windward Islands. (c.700 sq mi/1,810 sq km). The former British islands consist of the independent states of Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.
Of volcanic origin, the islands are generally rugged, mountainous, and well forested, and they have many streams and lakes. With an equable climate, ample rainfall, and rich soil, they produce a variety of tropical agricultural crops for export, including bananas, spices, limes, and cacao. The islands are subject to hurricanes. Although small-scale manufacturing has gained importance, the most substantial change has been the growth of the tourist trade, which constitutes the region’s economic mainstay. The deep and sheltered harbors encourage considerable interisland commerce. Fort-de-France, on Martinique, and Castries, on Saint Lucia, are the islands’ chief cities. The islands are largely inhabited by descendants of Africans, who were brought as slaves during the colonial period. The culture varies from island to island, but the French influence is particularly strong.
For some time after Columbus’s exploration of the islands, they were largely ignored by Europeans and left to the indigenous Caribs. In the early 17th cent., colonization was undertaken by the British and the French; settlements and sovereignty overlapped. The long struggle for dominance in the islands was a significant part of the worldwide Anglo-French conflict. Several naval battles were fought there; in 1782, off Saint Lucia, the French Admiral de Grasse was defeated by Admiral Rodney. In the Napoleonic Wars the islands traded hands, and it was only after the close of the conflict that Britain established its dominance over them.

Sri Lanka (from the Sanskrit Venerable Island), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka (pronounced /ˌʃriːˈlɑːŋkɑː/, Sinhala: , Tamil: இலங்கை; known as Ceylon (/sɪˈlɒn/) before 1972 and as Taprobane (/təˈprɒbəniː/) in ancient times), is an island country in South Asia, located about 31 kilometres (19.3 mi) off the southern coast of India. It is home to around twenty million people.

Because of its location in the path of major sea routes, Sri Lanka is a strategic naval link between West Asia and South East Asia.[citation needed] It has been a center of Buddhist religion and culture from ancient times.[citation needed] The Sinhalese community forms the majority of the population; Tamils, who are concentrated in the north and east of the island, form the largest ethnic minority. Other communities include Moors, Burghers, Kaffirs and the Malays.

The country is famous for the production and export of tea, coffee, coconuts and rubber.[citation needed] The natural beauty of Sri Lanka’s tropical forests, beaches and landscape, as well as its rich cultural heritage, make it a world famous tourist destination.[citation needed]

After over two thousand years of rule by local kingdoms, parts of Sri Lanka were colonized by Portugal and the Netherlands beginning in the 16th century, before control of the entire country was ceded to the British Empire in 1815.[citation needed] During World War II, Sri Lanka served as an important base for Allied forces in the fight against the Japanese Empire.[8] A nationalist political movement arose in the country in the early 20th century with the aim of obtaining political independence, which was eventually granted by the British after peaceful negotiations in 1948.

In the 19th and 20th Centuries, Sri Lanka became a plantation economy, famous for its production and export of cinnamon, rubber and Ceylon tea, which remains a trademark national export. The development of modern ports under British rule raised the strategic importance of the island as a centre of trade. During World War II, the island hosted important military installations and Allied forces. However, the plantation economy aggravated poverty and economic inequality. From 1948 to 1977 socialism strongly influenced the government’s economic policies. Colonial plantations were dismantled, industries were nationalised and a welfare state established. While the standard of living and literacy improved significantly, the nation’s economy suffered from inefficiency, slow growth and lack of foreign investment. From 1977 the UNP government began incorporating privatisation, deregulation and promotion of private enterprise. While the production and export of tea, rubber, coffee, sugar and other agricultural commodities remains important, the nation has moved steadily towards an industrialised economy with the development of food processing, textiles, telecommunications and finance. By 1996 plantation crops made up only 20% of export, and further declined to 16.8% in 2005 (compared with 93% in 1970), while textiles and garments have reached 63%. The GDP grew at an average annual rate of 5.5% during the early 1990s, until a drought and a deteriorating security situation lowered growth to 3.8% in 1996. The economy rebounded in 19972000, with average growth of 5.3%. The year of 2001 saw the first recession in the country’s history, as a result of power shortages, budgetary problems, the global slowdown, and continuing civil strife. Signs of recovery appeared after the 2002 ceasefire which died away following the beginning of war. Since the separatist war ended in May 2009 the Sri Lankan stock market has shown marked gains to be among the 3 best performing markets in the worldThe Sri Lankan stock market has come into the first three best stock markets in the world. The Colombo Stock Exchange reported the highest growth in the world for 2003, and today Sri Lanka has the highest per capita income in South Asia.

From cosmetics and undergarments; From sculptures to bull semen, The Associated Press reports that U.S. exports to Iran have grown ten-fold in the years since President Bush has occupied the White House.

According to The A-P, at least 158-million dollars worth of exports in cigarettes alone.
Exports from America grew even in the wake of Mr.Bush’s declaration at a state-of-the-union address that Iran was one of the pillars of the world’s so-called “axis of evil.”

So why have exports grown even as the Administration has worked to isolate Iran from the international community?

The answer is that U.S. trade policy exempts agricultural commodities, medicine and a few other categories of goods, furthermore the sanctions first imposed after the Islamic revolution three decades ago have not been uniformly enforced.

According to a U.S. Treasury Department spokesman, sanctions are “targeted against the regime, not the people” of Iran.

More surprisingly, perhaps, although sanctions have been primarily intended to frustrate Iran’s efforts to build its military, The A-P found that at least $148-thousand dollars worth of unspecified weapons and other military gear were exported from the U.S. to Iran, including more than 107-thousand dollars in military rifles and rifle parts.
U-S authorities now are investigating whether the export of military items could be even more significant than this suggests. Two men in the state of Florida were indicted recently on charges they shipped U.S. military aircraft parts to Iran, including TomCat and attack-helicopter parts.
The Associated Press, using the federal government’s own data, concluded that Iran received about 640-thousand dollars worth of aircraft and aircraft parts during President Bush’s two terms in office. The news service concluded that the U.S. government seems uncoordinated on efforts to limit trade with Iran.

To date, Administration efforts to pass laws that would strengthen enforcement of trade sanctions has been stalled in Congress.
Exports to Iran are a politically sensitive but tiny part of the trade that could result should diplomatic relations improve between the U.S. and Iran.

Of the exported products during the last seven years, the number one category has been cigarettes.The number two category, behind tobacco products, includes vaccines, serums and blood products.

American businesses view Iran as an untapped market with great earning potential. 45-hundred sought export licenses.

If political tensions ease, millions of people in both the U.S. and Iran could benefit.

This goat farm is not only producing clean pasteurized goat milk but also we are successful in breeding new goat breeds for export sales. Also, we have this so-called By Product in which we are gathering the goats excrement and use it as effective fertilizer for the plants and fruits or trees in the farm. This method is able to help reduce the wheatgrass and insects problems because were only using the natural ingredients for our farm. We are strictly concerned about our environment. This is the best way for farmers and gardeners to manage their farms without disturbing the nature with chemicals.

Meet Palestinian farmers living in the Jordan Valley, who are forced to abandon their land due to lack of water and harassment from the Israeli military. One tests his entrepreneurship in his home village, the other accepts work in one of the illegal Israeli colonies, sacrificing his rights as a worker and so much more. Then meet an Israeli settler who asserts he is so happy to be able to give 35 Palestinians jobs, for without him, they’d starve.

Palestinians living in the Jordan Valley are among the most oppressed and thirsty communities living in the West Bank – despite the abundance of fresh water resources. Illegal Israeli colonizers are dominating the landscape and its inhabitants with large agricultural settlements, which export 99% of the dates, grapes, bananas and flowers they produce to Europe. The same Israeli permitting restrictions that are drastically limiting Palestinian water and sanitation development throughout the West Bank are obstructing nearly all development in 99% of the Jordan Valley. Israel is demolishing Palestinian wells, pipelines and even rainwater harvesting cisterns.
